Miguel Cardoso has urged Mamelodi Sundowns supporters to trust his selection decisions as the champions navigate a demanding schedule across domestic and continental competitions.
Sundowns have little time to celebrate their MTN8 final victory over Orlando Pirates in Durban, with a Premiership meeting against Richards Bay followed by a trip to Angola to face Wiliete in the Caf Champions League.
The Carling Knockout also awaits, with Marumo Gallants drawn as their opponents in the last 16. Cardoso believes careful squad management will be essential if Sundowns are to maintain their standards while competing on several fronts.
The Portuguese coach acknowledged that rotation would be unavoidable, but insisted that opportunities would be determined by fitness, readiness and motivation.
“I would like Mamelodi Sundowns fans to also understand that, so they can support our technical decisions here and there,” Cardoso said. “Managing the group puts the ones who show us that they are in better condition to play.”
He also stressed the importance of keeping every member of the squad motivated and prepared to contribute when called upon.
Fawaaz Basadien provided an example of that approach with an impressive performance against Richards Bay after Divine Lunga and Aubrey Modiba had featured at left-back in the MTN8 final.
Cardoso welcomed the defender’s response, saying competition for places was encouraging players to meet the challenges set by the coaching staff.
“Obviously, we know that we have competition in positions and there are players who can play at any moment,” he said. “We tell them to trust that their moment will appear.”
The coach made clear, however, that rotation would not mean compromising standards. Wiliete, who lead their domestic league in Angola, represent a significant test as Sundowns seek to carry their domestic momentum into Africa.
Cardoso has also called for humility following the MTN8 triumph, warning that the team still face important challenges in their pursuit of further silverware.
For Sundowns, success will depend on maintaining intensity while keeping the squad fresh, competitive and ready for the demands ahead.
