Mamelodi Sundowns legend Surprise Moriri has called on supporters to give Miguel Cardoso their full backing as the club prepares to resume its domestic campaign after the international break.
Sundowns entered the break buoyed by their victory over Al-Ahli Saudi in the African-Asian Pacific Cup, but their attention will soon turn to a meeting with Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October.
Cardoso has faced scrutiny from sections of the Sundowns support since taking charge, particularly over his pragmatic approach. However, last season’s CAF Champions League triumph and the club’s recent success have strengthened his position.
Moriri believes supporters should give the Portuguese coach time to develop his team.
“You must remember that Sundowns fans know their football and even when you win sometimes they will always say, ‘We won but…’” Moriri said on Radio 2000.
“I think our coach really understands our team. We just have to make sure that we support him. The supporters must also be patient and rally behind the coach and the players because they need us.”

Moriri also pointed to the demands of managing a club accustomed to sustained success, with Sundowns seeking to defend their continental crown while competing for another Betway Premiership title.
“We should have more faith in him as the club and we should support the project,” he said. “The coach is really making sure that he works hard on this team.”
The former midfielder acknowledged that Sundowns supporters have become accustomed to winning, making patience difficult when performances do not meet expectations.
“I know it’s very difficult for our supporters because they were spoiled in the past,” Moriri said.
“But the technical team is really working hard to make sure that they make our supporters happy and we’re all behind them.”
