The Soweto Giants have decided against renewing the contracts of interim co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.
The pair took charge in the opening weeks of the season following the early departure of Nasreddine Nabi.
Despite calls for an immediate permanent replacement at the time, the former assistants were given the remainder of the season to prove their mettle. They ultimately guided Amakhosi to an impressive third-place Betway Premiership finish.
But despite their strong showing in the league, the Soweto side has now confirmed the exit of both tacticians. Part of an official club statement read:
“With the season concluded, Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the departure of coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze following the end of their contracts with the Club. Both initially served as assistants to former coach Nasreddine Nabi. After Nabi’s exit, the duo stepped up to lead the senior team and guided the side to an improved 54 points in the league, which is the Club’s second-best tally in the past eleven years.”
During the campaign, they led Chiefs in 39 matches across the Betway Premiership, CAF Confederation Cup, Carling Knockout Cup, and Nedbank Cup—recording 19 wins, 11 draws, and 9 losses. They narrowly missed out on the knockout phase of the CAF Confederation Cup on goal difference.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to the coaches for their dedication and contribution, and wish them all the best in their future,” the club added. Amakhosi management noted that further announcements will follow in the coming weeks as they build toward the new season.
The Shortlist: 3 Potential Coaches for the Glamour Boys
With Kaizer Chiefs set to announce a new head coach in the coming days, speculation is rife. Here are five coaches heavily linked with taking over the reins at Naturena:
1. Manqoba Mngqithi
Currently one of the leading candidates for the position, Mngqithi brings a wealth of local experience and a proven track record of winning domestic titles. Known for his tactical flexibility and deep understanding of the South African football landscape, he is highly regarded as a coach who can handle the immense pressure of a big-three club.
2. Pitso Mosimane
Jingles remains the dream appointment for many Amakhosi faithful. As one of the most decorated coaches in African football history, Mosimane has the pedigree, elite mentality, and continental experience that Chiefs desperately crave to restore their status as a powerhouse. He is reportedly a top priority for the board.
3. Benni McCarthy
South Africa’s legendary former striker is always in the conversation when a high-profile local seat opens up. Having sharped his coaching tools on the international stage—including a high-profile stint as a first-team coach at Manchester United—McCarthy offers the star power, charisma, and attacking philosophy that aligns perfectly with the “Glamour Boys” identity.
