Ronnie Gabriel: Lundi Mahala poised to become Richards Bay’s goal machine

Richard Bay FC coach, Ronnie Gabriel, has backed attacker Lundi Mahala to solve their goalscoring issues.

Mahala was in fine form as Richards Bay played out a thrilling 2-2 draw against Golden Arrows in the KwaZulu-Natal derby at Umhlathuze Sports Ground on Friday night.

After the Natal Rich Boyz took the lead and then fell behind, Mahala rose above the defence to head in a 65th-minute equaliser, connecting with a precise cross from Moses Mthembu, who had earlier converted a penalty won by Mahala himself in the ninth minute.

The result underlined Mahala’s influence, helping Richards Bay maintain their impressive home record, with just one defeat at Umhlathuze this season.

Despite Arrows’ goals from Lungelo Nguse and Siyanda Ndlovu, Mahala’s presence kept the home side in the contest and highlighted his growing importance.

“Mahala has been fantastic for us so far,” Gabriel said after the match as quoted by Sportswire.

“His physicality, movement, and aerial ability are giving defenders a nightmare. You saw it on Friday – Golden Arrows struggled to cope with him.

“He protects the ball well, attacks spaces intelligently, and is growing in leaps and bounds. The goals are coming, and we expect even more.

“He has a good head on his shoulders and huge potential. He’s going to score plenty this season.”

Mahala, who joined Richards Bay during the off-season, has already netted five goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Gabriel will once again be counting on the striker to deliver when Richards Bay travel to Siwelele for the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 clash at Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday.

With his blend of power, pace, and poise in the air, Mahala looks set to become a constant threat and a key figure in Richards Bay’s attacking arsenal this season.
