Kaizer Chiefs youngster, Thulani Mabaso, captured the hearts of Amakhosi supporters with an impressive senior debut, also earning praises from coach Cedric Kaze for his composed performance.

The 21-year-old was introduced in the 74th-minute as a replacement for Lebohang Maboe during Amakhosi’s 1-0 win over Golden Arrows on Tuesday at FNB Stadium.

Mabaso was instrumental in Chiefs clinching the DStv Diski Challenge title last season and earned a spot in the starting lineup of this season’s Carling All-Stars team that battled Orlando Pirates in December.

Kaze praised Mabaso’s strong character and bravery, adding that he has been consistent ever since they started integrating him into the senior team.

“I think it’s a player that showed us that he can be consistent because the biggest thing is I have been in a youth setup before, but I believe that here in South Africa we give too much gift to the young players,” said Kaze.

“A player like Mabaso, he’s a player that we went with him to Netherland in pre-season. He did very good, but we wanted to see that he could be consistent.

“He did very good with the DDC, went to England, played Carling [All-Stars], and you see that he’s a player with character.

“He’s not scared, or he doesn’t shy away when he plays with players with experience, and we want to have those players of character, and we want to as well to have players with personality

“They need to show that they deserve to be there, not one good game and then the player gets promoted, but he needs to show in time that he is a player who can bring something.”

The Glamour Boys are set to continue with their CAF Confederations Cup campaign on Sunday against Zambian team, Zesco United. They experienced struggles in their opening two group stage matches, losing to Al-Masry and being held to a draw by Zamalek.

Kaze said the victory against Arrows will motivate them to secure maximum points in Zambia on Sunday. Chiefs are sitting third in Group D with one point; they need to finish in the top two spots to qualify for the knockout rounds.

“It’s three points that’s going to give us hope and very good momentum going into our game on Sunday in the CAF Confederations in Zambia,” he concluded.
