DR Congo’s AFCON campaign has suffered a setback after head coach Sebastien Desabre confirmed that Arthur Masuaku is dealing with a minor ankle sprain.
Masuaku had started both of his country’s group-stage matches in the tournament, but was forced off in the 73rd minute against Senegal after appearing to pick up a knock. At the time, the extent of the problem was unclear, prompting concern for both club and country.
“Tests revealed that he has a minor ankle sprain. His injury will be assessed in a few days,” said Desabre.
While the injury is not believed to be serious, his absence is a blow for DR Congo as they continue their AFCON campaign and prepare to take on Mozambique in their final group-stage match tonight at the Stade Adrar stadium.
From a Sunderland perspective, the situation is being closely monitored. Masuaku joined the Black Cats during the off-season transfer window, but his long-term future at the club has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks. With the January window approaching, reports have suggested a possible departure.
