FIFA World Cup: Zambia's FA make bold decision involving Ex-Chelsea Boss

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has officially announced that head coach Avram Grant has departed his role by mutual agreement.

The separation concludes the tenure of the 70-year-old former Chelsea, West Ham, and Ghana manager, who was initially appointed by Zambia in 2022.

Grant’s Mixed Legacy

Avram Grant’s two-year spell was marked by an immediate and significant achievement: he successfully guided the national team to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications.

That being said, his most recent assignment was less successful, as he oversaw the team’s unsuccessful 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Zambia finished fourth in Group E, placing them behind qualifiers Morocco, as well as Niger and Tanzania, only managing to finish above bottom-side Congo.

Grant was scheduled to lead the Zambian side out next month in a friendly international against South Africa as part of the preparations for the upcoming AFCON tournament, but he has now stepped down before that fixture.

FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande confirmed the news, stating: “The two parties agreed to mutually separate with FAZ wishing Mr. Grant the best of luck in his future endeavours.

The rest of the details will be communicated in due course. For now can only thank Mr. Grant for his contribution to the Zambian game.”

The FAZ will now immediately begin the search for a new coach to take the reins ahead of their appearance at the next AFCON finals.
