Super Eagles: Eric Chelle hails Gabon's quality ahead of Nigeria's World Cup playoff

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has expressed deep respect for Gabon, describing Nigeria’s upcoming World Cup playoff opponents as a technically gifted side.

Currently on a brief visit to Portugal, Chelle revealed that he has been following several Gabonese players closely, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who continues to shine for Marseille in the UEFA Champions League.

“I am here in Portugal to see my daughter, but I watched the game between Sporting and Marseille in the Champions League, and Aubameyang played in that game,” Chelle was quoted by Sports247.

The Nigerian tactician highlighted Gabon’s strength in depth and praised the influence of their coach, who he believes has instilled a clear and effective philosophy within the team.

“Gabon have a good team. They have great players like Aubameyang, Lemina, and Bruno Ecuele Manga. They also have a good coach with a solid philosophy. When the team plays, you can see they are impressive,” he said.

Chelle’s remarks come as Nigeria intensifies preparations for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff to be played in Morocco, a tie that will determine which nation secures qualification for the global showpiece.

The Super Eagles boss emphasized that his players cannot afford to take the Panthers lightly and must maintain focus and discipline throughout the contest.

“This is not a team we can underestimate. We must prepare well and stay focused. Every little detail will matter in a game like this,” Chelle cautioned.

With both teams determined to secure a spot at the World Cup, Chelle’s words set the tone for a tactical and fiercely contested encounter expected to capture the attention of the continent next month.
