Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen discusses Nasreddine Nabi’s looming departure

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is confident that the team will remain focused despite the rumoured departure of head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Amakhosi struggled under Nabi in the Betway Premiership last season as they ended their campaign in a disappointing ninth place.

They did, however, scoop their first silverware in 10 years by defeating Orlando Pirates to win the Nedbank Cup.

Assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze guided Amakhosi to three wins from their opening three games of the new season in the absence of Nabi, who was attending to his wife, who had been involved in a motor accident.

Upon his return, Nabi steered his team to a goalless draw with Mamelodi Sundowns, a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows and heavy 3-1 defeat to league leaders Sekhukhune United but left the club before their narrow 1-0 CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary first round clash with Angolan side Kabuscorp.

Chiefs are next in action against Marumo Gallants in the league on Wednesday, and Petersen says there is no truth to the rumours that Chiefs downed tools when Nabi was in charge.

“At the end of the day it’s just football… coaches come and go. The main thing for us is to stay focused. We have back-to-back games and I think it’s important to try and focus on the job at hand because at the end of the day our job is to play football,” the goalkeeper said.

“It’s not for us to panic. We can’t start to doubt ourselves. We’ve proven to ourselves that we’re capable of doing well, defending well and not conceding goals. So, I think we just need to take a step back and analyse ourselves, see where it went wrong and we have an opportunity to correct whatever we’ve got wrong against Marumo.”
