Pogiso Makhoye questions Orlando Pirates loanee Monnapule Saleng’s contribution to Orbit College

Pogiso Makhoye has raised concerns regarding the impact of Orlando Pirates loanee Monnapule Saleng on Orbit College.

Saleng joined the newly promoted side at the start of the season and has been featured in four matches, but has yet to score or assist.

The move came after the 27-year-old was at loggerheads with Pirates following a reportedly failed transfer, which saw him being sidelined for the greater part of the 2024/25 season.

He was influential in the Buccaneer’s recent success which saw them lifting five trophies under Jose Riveiro, making 70 appearances, netting 25 goals and providing 17 assists across all competitions.

Makhoye admitted that Saleng’s issues with his parent club have had an impact on his performances on the field.

“In the four games that we’ve played I think he’s not that Saleng we used to see at Pirates,” Makhoye said on SNAWA.

“He’s still struggling, he didn’t give us much especially in the four games that he played because he provided no assist and no goal. Even when we played Pirates where he was not playing, I felt that the youngsters did well without him.

Makhoye promised to help the former Moroka Swallows player work through his challenges. He also pointed out that the atmosphere at Orbit is different, since the younger players see him as an experienced leader. At Pirates, many teammates were already well-known in South African football.

“But we will help him to adjust to the team, we are patient with him but as much as we are patient with him, we need to put the team first.

“But we will work with him and see how we can improve the team.”

“I think (his challenges) are physical and mental because now you are coming to a small team where everybody is looking up at you and you need to carry the team.

“I think that on its own is a challenge, are you ready to do that? Because remember at Pirates he had about 15-star players. So, here everybody is looking up to him.

“Everybody is looking at him saying can you carry this team, and I think that weight on his shoulders is very difficult for him.

“Because he has not been playing, so that’s why I’m saying we have to help him, and I think we will be a different team when we coming back to this international Fifa break.”

The Mswenko Boys are currently 15th on the log with three points. They will return to action against Chippa United on Tuesday, 16 September in a Betway Premiership match.
