MIGUEL CARDOSO’S TACTICAL MASTERCLASS FACES CUP KINGS ORLANDO PIRATES

Miguel Cardoso took over as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns in December 2024, stepping into the demanding role with a solid reputation for tactical precision and an impressive track record managing clubs across both Europe and Africa.

His appointment followed a successful tenure at various clubs, where he was known for his ability to implement strategic play and enhance player performance.

Cardoso made his MTN8 debut for the Brazilians recently, and he has already made a significant impact after leading the team to a convincing 4-0 victory against Richards Bay at the iconic Lucas Moripe Stadium.

This commanding win came despite the absence of crucial players such as Khuliso Mudau, Lucas Ribeiro, and Peter Shalulile. Cardoso’s skill in adapting tactics and motivating a reshuffled team was clearly on display, setting a positive tone for their MTN8 campaign.

The semi-final draw has paired Sundowns with their arch-rivals, Orlando Pirates, igniting one of South Africa’s most intense football rivalries. With a history steeped in competition, Cardoso acknowledged the emotional weight of this matchup, asserting that the outcome would ultimately depend on which team can assert their dominance over the two-legged showdown.

He is keenly focused on bolstering squad depth in preparation for a challenging fixture list that includes critical clashes with Stellenbosch, Kaizer Chiefs, and AmaZulu.

During his tenure, Cardoso has faced both highs and lows against the Pirates. Notably, in March 2025, Sundowns experienced a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Pirates, a match in which Cardoso candidly admitted that his side was outplayed.

However, demonstrating resilience, they later avenged this loss with a commanding 4-1 victory at Loftus Versfeld, a decisive statement win that played a pivotal role in securing Sundowns’ record-equalling 73-point league campaign.

Historically, Orlando Pirates have had the upper hand in cup competitions against Sundowns, particularly in the MTN8 arena. The statistics reveal that Pirates have claimed 13 championships, including a dramatic victory in the penalty shootout during the 2023 final, while Sundowns have secured four titles. This historical context adds an extra layer of intensity and anticipation to the upcoming semi-final clash.

The first leg of the MTN8 semi-final is scheduled for 16 August at Orlando Stadium, with the return leg taking place on 23 August in Pretoria. With Cardoso at the helm, Mamelodi Sundowns are determined to rewrite their cup history and move one step closer to adding more silverware to their prestigious collection.
