Another One Bites the Dust: SuperSport International Confirms Sale of SuperSport United to Siwelele Football Club

In a recurring pattern affecting South African football, SuperSport International has officially announced the sale of its Premier Soccer League club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd.

This highly anticipated transaction is set to reshape the landscape of the top flight, with significant implications for both clubs and their fan bases.

Reports indicate that the sale, rumored to be in the region of R50 million, is driven by a consortium aiming to revive the cherished Bloemfontein Celtic brand by renaming SuperSport United as Siwelele Football Club.

SuperSport United, the three-time Premiership champions, reportedly held an urgent meeting with all players and coaches on Thursday to address the pressing matters surrounding the club’s future.

An official announcement detailing the full implications of the sale is expected to follow, once the necessary approvals are granted.

Following a rigorous and closed bidding process, Siwelele Football Club emerged as the successful bidder, securing the rights to purchase Matsatsantsa. The finalization of the deal remains contingent upon the approval of the PSL Executive Committee, a standard procedure for such transfers of club status.

Strategic Shift for SuperSport International

Explaining the rationale behind the sale, Rendani Ramovha, CEO of SuperSport, stated: “The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow us to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa and a leading global competitor.

Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation.”

This statement underscores a move by SuperSport International to divest from direct club ownership and instead concentrate on its core broadcasting and content provision services, adapting to the evolving media landscape.

Siwelele FC’s Vision for the Future

Calvin Le John, Chairman of Siwelele Football Club, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, acknowledging the significant responsibility that comes with it.

“As Siwelele F.C, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL,” said Le John.

“SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL Executive Committee.” This highlights the new ownership’s intention to leverage SuperSport United’s established success while forging a new identity rooted in the spirit of Bloemfontein Celtic.

Out of respect for the ongoing processes of the PSL Executive Committee, Siwelele F.C., MultiChoice, and SuperSport have collectively agreed to refrain from making any further public statements until the league’s final decision is rendered.

This development marks the end of an era for SuperSport United as an owned entity of SuperSport International, paving the way for a new chapter under the Siwelele Football Club banner.
