Kaizer Chiefs football fans are in for a treat as Amakhosi announced on Thursday that they will face Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in this year’s Toyota Cup.
The highly anticipated pre-season encounter is set to take place at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Moses Mabhida Stadium holds a special significance for the Glamour Boys, serving as one of their primary alternative home grounds for several years, a venue where they often enjoy strong support.

This marks the second edition of the Toyota Cup, a pre-season competition designed to showcase African football talent. Last season, Kaizer Chiefs, under the new leadership of Nasreddine Nabi, began their campaign with a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Tanzanian side Young Africans.
This year, they face another formidable challenge in Asante Kotoko, Ghana’s record champions with an impressive 25 Ghanaian Premier League titles to their name, though their last league triumph was in the 2021/22 season.
A Clash of Continental Competitors
The upcoming match is more than just a pre-season friendly; it’s a clash between two clubs preparing for continental action. Both Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko have secured berths in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup season, having each lifted their respective domestic FA Cups.
Indeed, The Glamor Boys booked their spot by winning the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on May 10, defeating arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in a memorable final.
Jessica Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs’ Marketing and Commercial Director, expressed her enthusiasm for the fixture. “This year we will be in Durban, our home away from home,” she stated. “I’m proud and privileged to announce that we will play Asante Kotoko from Ghana – a team that we played in the Vodacom Challenge many years ago. We’ve even had some players from them before.”
Motaung emphasized the broader significance of the tournament, highlighting its role in promoting African football. “It’s a tournament that showcases African talent, African brands and celebrates African football,” she added.
“We’re excited to play Asante, because we’re two teams who are playing in the Confed Cup, hopefully we will not meet each other too soon.”
This match promises to be a thrilling curtain-raiser for the new season, offering both teams a crucial test as they fine-tune their squads for domestic and continental challenges.
