Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Gaston Sirino has voiced strong support for a former Sundowns teammate as the front-runner for the PSL Player of the Season award.
With the season reaching its decisive phase, discussions are heating up over who merits the league’s highest individual honour.
While several contenders are vying for the spotlight, Sirino firmly believes Lucas Ribeiro’s impact at Chloorkop sets him apart from the rest.
“Of course, of course! Lucas Ribeiro is a top player – and also my friend,” Sirino told reporters this week. “He has all the qualities to be the Player of the Season because the numbers are there.
He plays well in every game, and Sundowns are also doing well. For me, he is the best player in South Africa right now.”

The Brazilian forward has played a central role in Sundowns’ domestic dominance and continental push. With 16 goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances, Ribeiro has consistently delivered in key moments for Masandawana.
His ability to unlock defences and drive Sundowns’ high-tempo attack has been a hallmark of the club’s success this season, both in the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League, where the Brazilians are once again eyeing continental silverware.
Ribeiro, however, isn’t without serious competition. Orlando Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng has had a breakthrough season, lighting up the league with his creativity and maturity well beyond his years.
The 19-year-old has 12 goals and 13 assists in 44 matches, adding real spark to Jose Riveiro’s setup and helping Pirates stay in contention on multiple fronts.
His impact has not gone unnoticed, and many consider the teenager a legitimate contender for top honours – if not now, then certainly in seasons to come.
While there are other consistent performers across the league, the consensus is narrowing around Ribeiro and Mofokeng as the two frontrunners. One brings polished pedigree and proven output at the top level; the other, precocious talent and game-changing flair.
Sirino, who shared a dressing room with Ribeiro during his final season at Sundowns, has seen the Brazilian’s qualities up close and believes his former teammate’s consistent excellence sets him apart.
As the curtain begins to draw on the 2024/25 campaign, the final rounds of fixtures could swing the vote one way or another.
Whether it’s Ribeiro finishing strong for Sundowns or Mofokeng driving Pirates to silverware, the closing stages may yet define the destination of South African football’s most coveted individual prize.
