UCL Chaser: Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Continues European Success with Second Trophy

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyanbonga Ngezana is celebrating another significant achievement in his burgeoning European career, having just clinched his second trophy in Romania.

His club, FCSB (formerly Steaua București), secured the Romanian Super Cup title, adding to their recent league triumph.

The Romanian powerhouse were officially crowned Superliga champions on Saturday evening, a result sealed by a dramatic 2-2 draw between their closest rivals, CFR Cluj and Universitatea Craiova, effectively ending their pursuit of the top spot.

FCSB then emphatically celebrated their 28th national championship with a decisive 2-0 victory over Universitatea Cluj on Sunday night. This commanding win propelled them nine points clear at the summit with only two matches remaining, marking a second consecutive league title for the talented South African defender.

Ngezana, 26, played a pivotal role in FCSB’s historic Superliga win in the 2023/24 season – their first league title in nine long years.

Since his move from Kaizer Chiefs prior to that season, he has become a key figure in the team’s defense, featuring in an impressive 31 matches and earning a well-deserved place in the league’s official Team of the Season.

Adding to this success, Ngezana and his FCSB teammates faced off against Corvinul Hunedoara in the Romanian Super Cup on Thursday.

In a dominant performance, FCSB emerged victorious with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline, courtesy of goals from David Miculescu, Marius Stefanescu, and Luis Phelipe.

While Ngezana started the Super Cup clash on the bench, he entered the fray for the final 15 minutes, contributing to the team’s solid finish.

This latest triumph provides further momentum for FCSB as they gear up for their first UEFA Champions League qualifying round match against Virtus on July 9th.

Ngezana’s continued success in Europe not only highlights his individual talent and adaptability but also serves as an inspiring story for South African football on the international stage.
