Bafana Bafana Ascend in FIFA Rankings Following World Cup Qualifier Success

The latest FIFA world rankings, released on Thursday, revealed that Bafana Bafana‘s upward trajectory was not just on the pitch as they climbed one place on the rankings.

The improvement follows a successful window of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, where the AFCON bronze-medalists secured back to back vital victories against Lesotho and Benin respectively.

Under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana have demonstrated impressive form, currently enjoying an 18-match unbeaten streak. Their recent performances include six wins in their last seven fixtures, signaling their run of consistent performance was no flash in the pan.

Despite this considerable momentum and tangible results on the pitch, Bafana Bafana’s ascent in the global rankings was modest, landing them in 56th place worldwide. Nevertheless, this position holds significance on the continental stage, as it firmly places South Africa within the top 10 ranked African nations.

Bafana Bafana will continue their quest for World Cup qualification in September with scheduled fixtures against Lesotho and Nigeria respectively. Currently, Broos & Co are awaiting their fate after fielding an illegible midfielder during their victory against Lesotho last month.

Leading the African contingent is Morocco, who occupy an impressive 12th position globally. Senegal follows in 19th place, with Egypt positioned at 32nd. Algeria (36th) and reigning African champions Ivory Coast (41st) round out the top five African teams.

Other notable African nations in the upper echelons of the rankings include Nigeria (43rd), Tunisia (49th), and Cameroon (50th). Just ahead of Bafana Bafana are Mali, sitting in 53rd place.

While the single-spot climb might seem understated given their recent form, Bafana Bafana’s consistent positive results are undoubtedly contributing to a gradual improvement in their FIFA ranking.

Their top-ten status in Africa reflects the progress made and sets the stage for continued advancement as they pursue their 2026 FIFA World Cup aspirations.
