Breaking: Cape Town City Confirm Signing of Ex-Bafana Bafana Star

Cape Town City FC has officially confirmed the signing of former Bafana Bafana international Thulani Serero, weeks after interim coach Muhsin Ertugral hinted at the potential addition of the talented midfielder to the squad.

This move comes after Serero spent several weeks training with the team, suggesting that he was in advanced negotiations with the club.

The 34-year-old Serero, who has had a distinguished career in both Europe and the UAE, was reportedly in talks with the John Comitis-owned club to finalize his move. Ertugral, speaking to the media, confirmed that Serero’s arrival is imminent and that the player could make his debut for City in the near future.

“He went back to Emirates, quickly to sort out some issues. But yeah, he is a solution for us, definitely, but not against Orlando Pirates,” Ertugral explained.

“He needs to get his family sorted out, bring them back, and then probably, he is going back to Emirates and come back on the weekend, and then obviously the next game against AmaZulu, probably he will be ready.”

Serero’s return to South African football marks a significant moment in his career. After leaving South Africa in 2011, he went on to enjoy a successful stint in Europe, playing for prominent Dutch clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam and Vitesse Arnhem. He furthered his career in the United Arab Emirates, featuring for clubs like Al-Jazira Club and Khor Fakkan Club in the UAE Pro League.

Thulani “Cream” Serero will be a key addition to the Cape Town City squad as they look to improve their form under Ertugral’s guidance. The club is currently languishing in 10th place on the DStv Premiership table with 21 points from 19 matches, following a challenging start to the season. This led to the dismissal of previous coach Eric Tinkler.

Football fans across the country are eager to see how the Bafana Bafana legend can influence the team’s performances in the coming matches. The Citizens are in action against a high flying AmaZulu outfit this weekend. Kick off at the King Zwelithini Stadium is set for 15:30 on Sunday, 02 March 2025.
