Steve Barker marked a significant milestone in his coaching career with his 300th top-flight match as Stellenbosch FC triumphed 2-0 over Polokwane City FC in a Nedbank Cup Last 16 clash at the Danie Craven Stadium on Thursday night.

The Maroon Army came into the match with intensity, dominating from the first whistle and keeping Polokwane City on the back foot throughout the game.

Stellies quickly asserted control over the contest, applying constant pressure on Rise and Shine’s defense. This aggressive approach paid off early, with Polokwane’s Bulelani Nikani inadvertently scoring an own goal in the 12th minute, putting the home side in front.

Just before the halftime break, in the 37th minute, Devin Titus doubled Stellenbosch’s lead, scoring to give them a comfortable 2-0 advantage going into the interval.

Polokwane City, searching for a way back into the game, were left frustrated as they struggled to find a spark that could challenge Stellenbosch’s resolute defense. Despite their efforts, the Limpopo-based club could not break through, as Stellies maintained a disciplined and organized backline throughout.

Reflecting on his 300th match in the top flight, Barker expressed his satisfaction with both the result and his team’s performance. He commended his players for their outstanding display on the night, noting that their collective effort ensured they secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

“I thought it was a really good performance by the boys throughout, especially the first half. I think we were dominant and deserved to get the goals, and we did,” Barker told SuperSport TV in a post-match interview.

“So, I’m happy to be in a draw of the Last 8. We are looking forward to seeing who we will be facing, but overall, I think it was a very good solid performance from the boys.”

Barker also acknowledged the presence of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos at the match, which he felt was a great morale booster for his players. According to Barker, having the national team coach in the stands provided an extra source of motivation, inspiring the players to perform at their best.

“It was obviously nice to have the head coach of our national team here to watch the players. I think that’s always a boost to the players.”
