AmaZulu striker Elmo Kambindu is determined to silence any doubts about his goal-scoring ability after joining the club in the January transfer window.
Having arrived from Chippa United, where his goal-scoring form left much to be desired, Kambindu is fully aware of the expectations placed upon him as Usuthu’s new striker.
The 31-year-old Namibian international had a challenging stint at Chippa United, where he managed to score just five goals in 45 appearances following his arrival in 2022. His struggles were particularly evident in the first half of the current season, during which he failed to find the back of the net, despite making eight appearances for the Chilli Boys across all competitions.
Reflecting on the pressure of being a striker, Kambindu acknowledged the difficulty of meeting high expectations. “It is always difficult and different, especially as a striker, when a lot is expected from you,” he said. “It is always difficult and different, especially as a striker, when a lot is expected from you,” Kambindu said. “You have to be there as an anchor of the team; to help the team to score goals, and I’m working on that. Eventually, the goals will come; it is just a matter of time.”
Kambindu has made a promising start at AmaZulu, opening his account on his second ever appearance for the KZN-based club. The forward showed his aerial prowess as he scored a well-taken header in their 2-2 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium and followed it up with a solid performance in the team’s 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants infront of the home faithful.
“I’m just getting started,” he said, now with six goals in 47 PSL appearances. “I’m happy that I scored a goal in my first two games. I’m working hard as well to get more goals, and the guys have welcomed me well, and I feel like I’m at home.”
Kambindu is also excited to be part of AmaZulu’s rich footballing history as the eighth Namibian player to represent the club. His immediate impact has already endeared him to the AmaZulu faithful, and he’s determined to keep pushing for more.
Currently sitting in seventh place in the Betway Premiership with 23 points from 17 matches, AmaZulu’s next challenge comes in the Nedbank Cup, where they will face Marumo Gallants again in the Round of 16. Kick off at the Dr. Molemela Stadium this Saturday is set for 15:00.
