We take a look at why Bafana Bafana midfielder, Bongani Zungu, leaving for Spurs will be a mistake. |
In the week, Soccer Laduma broke the news that Bafana Bafana midfielder, Bongani Zungu, is a wanted man in England with Sheffield Wednesday interested, as well as a few other English clubs.
The report also said: “Spurs, along with Liverpool and West Ham, were made aware of the midfielder before he signed a pre-contract with Guimaraes in 2015, but were unwilling to make a move at that point given his lack of European experience.”
In recent days, links to Spurs have increased massively for Zungu, but one could only question whether the 24-year old former Sundowns midfielder would make it at the London-based club.
Ben 10 would only be the fourth South African to don the famous white jersey for Tottenham after Oldjohn Mabizela, Bongani Khumalo and Steven Pienaar.
The Premier League runners-up will be competing in the UEFA Champions League next season, as well as two other domestic competitions, so they will need a big squad if they are to compete in all tournaments.
Still, Zungu might find himself fall down the pecking order behind the likes of fellow African star, Victor Wanyama, as well as Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.
Zungu’s move to England will be great for South African football and he would gain plenty experience. However, he’s not guaranteed to get so much game time, which could be a worry.
Zungu is South Africa’s most sought-after footballer and he needs to be playing week in, week out.
Reports suggest that other unnamed English sides are looking at a big money move for the Bafana international, although there are some doubts he would be granted a work permit at this stage.
