UEFA EURO 2024: Today’s Match Previews

The group stage drama has settled, and the Euro 2024 knockout rounds are upon us! Romania and Netherlands meet for only the second time in a major tournament with the Orange winning 2 nil in the group stage of Euro 2008. If that wasn’t scarce enough, Austria and Turkey clash for the first time ever at a major tournament! Will the young guns of Turkey prevail over Ralf Rangnick’s well-drilled Austria outfit?

Here are SBN’s tips and predictions for today’s matches!

13/2 Romania | Draw 7/2 | Netherlands 4/10 (18:00)

The last-16 of Euro 2024 brings a clash of opposites at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Group winners Romania, known for their defensive solidity, will lock horns with the Netherlands, who scraped through as the best third-placed team but boast a wealth of attacking talent.

It is very much a tale of two styles in the Euro 2024 knockout stages. Against all odds, Romania topped their group, conceding a mere 3 goals in the process. Coach Edward Iordanescu has built a disciplined and well-organized unit, marshaled by Tottenham’s Radu Drăguşin at the back.

I think they will set up to frustrate the Dutch attack and exploit any weaknesses. Despite a shaky start, Netherlands carries a potent attacking threat with Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo leading the charge. Coach Ronald Koeman needs a convincing win to boost confidence and silence doubters. I think this one will be a low scorer decided by penalties.

9/10 Austria | Draw 23/1 | Turkey 31/10 (21:00)

The winner will take a giant leap towards their Euro 2024 dreams. This last-16 clash is a must-watch for fans of tactical battles. Austria’s organization will be severely tested against Turkey’s attacking force.

Led by manager Ralf Rangnick, Austria defied expectations with their exciting, flank-focused attacking style. Marcel Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic are in top form, promising a serious challenge to the Turkish defense.

Turkey’s journey was a rollercoaster – a high from their opening win against Georgia followed by a dip against Portugal, before a crucial win over the Czech Republic. Their attacking trio of Kenan Yildiz, Baris Alper Yilmaz, and Arda Guler is a force to be reckoned with.

Yildiz was a bright spark on the left for Turkey, with the Juventus youngster having a game-high six shots, including the one that eventually led to the opener. Only Schick (seven vs Georgia) has recorded more in a single game at Euro 2024. Montella will surely keep the faith in Yildiz and the equally impressive Güler in this one and I think they get on the scoresheet.

This clash promises to be a thrilling battle between two teams who love to attack. Back a high-scoring draw here.
