Transfer News: Real Madrid and Manchester United compete for Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras

Real Madrid have entered the fray to sign one of Europe’s most promising left-backs, Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras, joining Manchester United in wanting him.

Spanish media have also named Barcelona as another LaLiga club eyeing the young defender.

Madrid, renowned as one of the world’s top clubs, are fresh off a successful season where they clinched both La Liga and the Champions League titles.

With Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, they are currently leading the Spanish league and are poised to advance directly to the Champions League’s Round of 16. However, the club’s relentless pursuit of excellence means they are always on the lookout for players like Carreras to bolster their squad.

The 21-year-old has made a significant impact at Benfica, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 30 appearances across all competitions this season.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, as Manchester United, who sold him to Benfica in 2024, retain an interest with an 18 million euros buy-back clause in place.

Carreras himself has expressed contentment at Benfica, stating in an interview, “No. Actually, you never know, but I have a contract for many years here at Benfica, I’m happy. They gave me the opportunity to grow, and I owe everything to them.”

His comments suggest he is not eager to leave the Portuguese club in the January transfer window.

Beyond Carreras, Madrid have their sights set on other high-profile targets. The club has been linked with Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, whose contract ends in the summer of 2026.

Reports indicate Madrid are monitoring his situation closely, even as Liverpool plan discussions for a contract extension with potential interest also coming from Paris Saint-Germain.

Looking further ahead, Madrid are also in the race for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi. With Ancelotti potentially departing at the season’s end, Madrid are banking on appointing Xabi Alonso, who shares a Basque connection with Zubimendi, to sway the midfielder’s decision towards the Bernabeu.

However, not all transfer rumors hold water; Madrid have publicly dismissed any interest in Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, whose versatility allows him to play both in midfield and at right-back.

This transfer window promises to be an exciting one, with multiple clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, actively shaping their squads for future success.
