Tinkler on Maritzburg clash – ‘We have to show up’

Eric Tinkler

Cape Town City FC coach Eric Tinkler says his team ‘have to show up’ when they host his previous club Maritzburg United in DStv Premiership action on Tuesday evening.
Maritzburg were the last team Tinkler coached before taking the reins at City and the two sides’ encounter has a lot riding on it – with both sides on 14 points.

City will be the fresher of the two sides after their clash with Kaizer Chiefs scheduled for Saturday did not go ahead after the Amakhosi did not show due to a widespread outbreak of Covid-19 in their squad.

Tinkler was appointed Maritzburg head coach in January 2019 but stepped down by mutual consent after the Team of Choice under his command started the following season with five successive losses across all competitions.

And the former Bafana Bafana midfielder has urged his team to start ‘taking responsibility’ by starting to string together the wins, especially at home at the Cape Town Stadium, where Tuesday’s clash will take place.

“The games are coming think and fast now. This December period is very important to collect maximum points especially the home matches. I expect the players to take responsibility and produce a good performance, a winning performance because it’s important that we collect maximum points from our home games.

“There are no guarantees and no easy games in this league. I don’t think anyone would’ve thought Sekhukhune would be second place in the league, themselves included!

“So you have to work extremely hard for points. Its about having the right mindset. You can’t put in high quality performances against Mamelodi Sundowns and then drop your level against the others. We have to show up. That’s the most important factor.”
