Themba Zwane warming up

Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane has shared a crucial update on his recovery from an ankle injury that has sidelined him since October.

Speaking during the FIFA Club World Cup Trophy Tour, Zwane expressed gratitude to his family and team for their unwavering support during his rehabilitation. He also revealed that he no longer experiences pain while running, signalling progress in his recovery.

“it was difficult at first but obviously with the support of my team my family I had to push myself you know and I’m happy now at the moment I’m running outside (the ground) I don’t feel any pain, it’s just that it’s too tight at the moment but overall I think so far so good,” said Zwane.

Sundowns are currently experiencing a busy schedule having qualified for the knockout rounds of the CAF Champions League, Nedbank Cup last 16 and the ongoing Betway Premiership where they are currently topping the standings, six points ahead of second place Orlando Pirates.

To add to that, the Brazilians are set to partake in the newly expanded FIFA Club World that will be hosted by the United States of America starting on 14 June. The veteran midfielder said he is extra-motivated to recover and be part of the competition as well as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December.

“knowing for sure that there’s AFCON coming and there’s Club World Cup coming, those are the things that make me push more so that I can come back quicker and try to adjust quicker to the team so that I can play.

With Masandawana’s squad filled with talented players, the 35-year-old acknowledges the challenge of securing a spot in the starting lineup. However, he remains confident that his strong mentality will help him adapt quickly. He added that fighting to be in the starting eleven has been part of his life since joining the Yellow Nation.

“It is difficult but it goes with the belief, if you believe in yourself, I mean I’ve been in this situation since I came to Sundowns from (Mpumalanga Black) Aces I’ve been fighting for my position because it’s not easy, we’ve got a lot of quality players but the difference is your mindset, if you believe and you are strong here (mentaly) then you will do it and I think I got those,” Zwane concluded.
