Chippa United co-coach Thabo September shed light on the club’s strategic signing of Andile Jali and emphasised his invaluable influence.
Jali, 34, found himself without a club after departing Moroka Swallows amid their financial struggles in December. His agent, Mike Makaab, had indicated that the seasoned midfielder was contemplating retirement. However, Chippa United’s interest reignited his career, with September elaborating on what Jali brings to the team.
“Andile was mentally retired, so we had to have a conversation with him,” September remarked during the CAF B Licence course graduation.
“He’s not just any player; he has the potential to make a significant impact on the squad, and we need that.”
Acknowledging Jali’s physical limitations, September added, “We know he can’t play the entire season, so we have to manage that. But his influence is crucial, especially with the many young players we’ve brought in this season. He will be key in guiding them.”
Jali’s connection to the Eastern Cape, where Chippa United are based, was another factor in his signing. “He’s a local boy, which will help in attracting supporters to the stadium.
“His role is significant, and it extends beyond football.”
Jali’s professional journey began in 2007 with Pretoria University. His career took off at Orlando Pirates from 2009 to 2014, where he made 98 appearances, scored eight goals, and clinched six trophies.
Jali debuted internationally for Bafana Bafana in 2010, earning 49 caps and netting five goals.
In 2014, Jali moved to Belgium’s KV Oostende, spending four years there before returning to South Africa to join Mamelodi Sundowns. During his time at Sundowns, he was instrumental in securing four consecutive league titles from 2018 to 2022 and winning eight trophies between 2018 and 2023. He then briefly joined Swallows before becoming a free agent.
Now, at Chippa United, Jali is expected to play a pivotal role not just in matches, but as a mentor and leader, shaping the next generation of talent at the club.
