SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed that a deal to sign former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Keagan Dolly fell through at the last minute. Despite undergoing a medical, the club opted for Vincent Pule instead.
Matthews explained that the decision to sign Pule over Dolly was ultimately coach Gavin Hunt‘s call. Hunt cited Pule’s versatility and their previous successful partnership at Bidvest Wits as key factors in his decision. Indeed, the duo were part of the now-defunct team’s success as Wits won the 2016/17 South African topflight trophy.
Matthews said at their ACDC Express sponsorship announcement,
I think maybe Gavin [Hunt] was just uncertain as to where Keagan is. We did have a medical which was fine, but when it came down to selection of either A or B, that’s the coach’s call. And I look to close up what he wants, and he wanted Vincent.”
Dolly, who had been heavily linked with SuperSport following his contract expiration with Chiefs, is now a free agent.
