Sundowns v SuperSport Preview

ABSA Premiership | Tuesday 6 May | Loftus Stadium | 19:30

Mamelodi Sundowns find themselves five points clear at the top of the PSL, with champions Kaizer Chiefs in second place with a game in hand.

This weekend Sundowns face their Tshwane rivals, SuperSport United, looking for a win that will take them further away from Chiefs with just one more match to be played in the Brazilians’ title race.

If they are to win here then victory in their final match at Maritzburg United will bring them the league title back after seven years as Chiefs will have huge pressure when tackling their final three matches looking for maximum points.

SUNDOWNS

Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the PSL standings with a 1-0 win over Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.

For the high-flying Brazillians, it was an incredible ninth consecutive league win.

The victory brought Sundowns’ tally to 29 points (nine wins and two draws) from 14 away games this season as they edge ever-closer to league honours.

The only goal of the game came courtesy of a thunderbolt strike by Teko Modise in the seventh minute.

Modise took the lead in emphatic fashion for the visitors as he notched up his fifth goal of the season.

The 31-year-old ran onto a loose ball 30 metres out, and unleashed a stunner of a shot into the top left corner of the net to make it 1-0 to Sundowns.

PSL glory can finally highlight that their big-spending mantra has paid off after a six-year trophy drought, which has seen eight coaches making their way to the club since that Nedbank Cup triumph over MP Black Aces in 2008.

Pitso Mosimane has trimmed a quality squad that was already overflowing with too many foreigners and overloaded with talent that’d fit two teams.

Needless to say, the title is now for either team to lose or win. However, the matches Sundowns have to play to clinch it, are favourable for them.

Due to their massive depth in quality, superior to the likes of SuperSport United and Maritzburg United – Sundowns have the advantage.

Their imperious frontline has catapulted them to the top of the Premiership goalscoring charts.

Bafana Bastyle have performed admirably at home, racking up 10 wins in their 14 home matches and suffering just two defeats.

SUPERSPORT

SuperSport United occupy fourth spot on the table, 20 points off leaders Sundowns, having played just a game less.

After starting the season well, inconsistency has now become the norm in Matsatsantsa’s season.

They do play some good football but have struggled to put the ball at the back of the net when it most counted.

In their most recent match against Bidvest Wits it was the respective goalkeepers, Ronwen Williams and Moeneeb Josephs, who starred as the match ended in a 0-0 draw with Williams also saving a Wits penalty.

For all SuperSport’s troubles they have managed to pick up points on the road this season with five wins, four draws and suffering four losses.

SuperSport’s main concern are in the frontline with the team only scoring 34 goals in their 27 games whilst conceding 30.

With first choice strker Mame Niang out injured, Bradley Grobbler, Dino Ndlovu and veteran Sibusiso Zuma are struggling to strike fear into opposition defences.

Betting PredictionDRAW 5/2

The Tshwane derby could be the big test in Sundowns’ title aspirations. It is always pleasing to watch as it produces the spectacular in as far as goals and breathtaking saves are concerned. SuperSport United’s inconsistency presently doesn’t give them much of a chance to upset Mosimane’s men. Though, they do say that the form guide goes out the window in derbies. The reverse fixture was drawn 1-1 and SuperSport are tipped to upset the apple cart and earn another draw here.
