Sundowns’ 30 plus club not a problem, says Mnguni

Mamelodi Sundowns celebrate a goal

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Themba Mnguni says it not a problem the club have 10 players 30 or older as youngsters are coming through the ranks.

Hlompho Kekana (34), Kennedy Mweene (34), Wayne Arendse (34), Tebogo Langerman (33), Ricardo Nascimento (32), Tiyani Mabunda (31), Jeremy Brockie (31), Emiliano Tade (31), Anele Ngcongca (31) and Oupa Manyisa(30) are all in the 30 plus club.

However, Mguni takes the view that this is not a major concern as the likes of Lebohang Maboe (24), Lyle Lakay (27) and Rivaldo Coetzee (22) indicate the team’s youthful future.

He told the Sowetan: “When coach Pitso brought the likes of (Lebohang) Maboe and Lyle Lakay, who are younger, it was precisely for continuation.

“So, I think they are quite aware about it (the ages of players), the good thing is that even the younger guys like Rivaldo (Coetzee) have also been playing in the Champions League, so we are in a manageable situation.”

Other younger Sundowns stars are Motjeka Madisha (24), Sphelele Mkhulise (23) and Phakamani Mahlambi (21) amongst others.

Mguni concluded: “I don’t think we will struggle that much.”

Downs legend Roger Feutmba added he has full faith in coach Pitso Mosimane in terms of managing the situation: “It’s good to keep experienced players to guide the younger ones, but when they’re too many, it’s an issue.

“It’s not easy to let go, but I believe Pitso is a very clever coach who knows what to do.”
