Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter admitted after Wednesday evening’s 1-1 draw with AmaZulu at FNB Stadium, he would be “going mental” if he were Benni McCarthy.
Amakhosi went into the half-time break with a slender lead thanks to Keagan Buchanan’s 20th-minute own goal but were dealt a major setback on the hour mark as Cole Alexander picked up his second booking of the game.
AmaZulu made full use of their numerical advantage, eventually drawing level in the 76th minute through substitute Bongi Ntuli.
The visitors were also reduced to ten men late in the encounter as Samkelo Mgwazela was shown a second yellow card but Chiefs were unable to reclaim the lead in the closing stages.
In fact, Baxter admitted he would have been livid with his team if he were Benni McCarthy as Amakhosi were lucky to walk away from the contest with a share of the spoils.
“I thought we were good for about 15-20 minutes and then we switched off,” Baxter told SuperSport TV.
“We had good control of the game but then switched off and AmaZulu got back into the game in the last 15-20 minutes of the first half where they were threatening without being really dangerous.”
Baxter continued: “In the second half we wanted to get the ball more. That led to us losing structure.
“The red card (to Cole Alexander) put us against the wall and we conceded what was a very poor goal.
“Through the whole of the second half, our decision-making was very poor. If I was Benni (McCarthy), I would be going mental that they didn’t put us to the sword by three or four goals as I thought we were that bad.”
