Steve Barker: Stellenbosch is ready to battle Kaizer Chiefs

Nedbank Cup: Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker Acknowledges Polokwane City Challenge

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker has stressed the importance of picking up all three points at home to Kaizer Chiefs this evening.

It has been a hectic few months for Stellies, competing in both domestic and continental football this season.

They have played numerous midweek games, alongside their weekend commitments, but were lucky to be able to get in a few days rest ahead of their Amakhosi test.

Stellenbosch were supposed to play Royal AM this week but that game was postponed, with Royal AM currently suspended, but Chiefs were in action, in a 2-2 draw with AmaZulu.

In seventh place on the Betway Premiership table, with 20 points from 13 games, a win for Barker’s side would see them move above Amakhosi into fifth place.

Ahead of the game, the head coach said in the Citizen: “We are excited and looking forward to the opportunity (to play Chiefs).

“It has been a while since we haven’t had to play in midweek. We are looking forward and have been in a refreshed mood. The preparation has been going really well. Playing Chiefs is always special and it is a great opportunity for us to get maximum points and continue getting ourselves up the league table.

“It (this match) become massively important.”

Chiefs beat Stellies 2-1 at home a month ago, with Barker adding: “We played Chiefs away and didn’t get the result we wanted. This is our home game, our responsibility, and they are a team where we are in the table.

“Maximum points will put us in a strong position with a couple of games in hand.”
