Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker lauded his team’s resilience after their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium.
The triumph propelled Stellies to third in the Betway Premiership standings and handed Pirates their first league defeat of the season, snapping a seven-match winning streak.
Devin Titus’ decisive first-half goal was the highlight of a gritty performance, especially impressive given Stellenbosch’s challenging schedule, which included a gruelling trip to West Africa.
Arriving in Gauteng only a day before the match, Barker’s side defied the odds to secure their second consecutive win at Orlando Stadium.
“Pirates started really well,” Barker reflected. “In the first 10 minutes, their narrow play with Mofokeng and Nkota caused us some issues, but we adjusted. Genino Palace dropped deeper to neutralise Mofokeng, and our wide players worked hard to cut out their threats in the final third.”
Titus’ goal came from a swift counter-attack, with Ashley Cupido providing a precise assist. “We’re strong on transitions, and it showed,” Barker noted. “Devin finished it beautifully. After that, it was about staying disciplined and protecting the lead.”
Despite Pirates dominating possession, Stellenbosch’s defence held firm, with goalkeeper Sage Stephens making a crucial late save to preserve the clean sheet. Barker highlighted his team’s tactical organisation, crediting assistant coach Wesley Sergel for the meticulous setup.
“These players amaze me with their courage and commitment,” Barker said. “After such a tough week, to beat a team in such great form is remarkable. Wesley’s tactical work was superb, and the players executed the plan brilliantly.”
The win marked a fourth victory over Pirates in the past year and a special milestone for Barker. “To achieve my 100th win here, under these circumstances, is incredible,” he added.
Stellenbosch now shift focus to their CAF Confederation Cup clash against RS Berkane at Moses Mabhida Stadium, aiming to build on their impressive form.
