Steve Barker: FIFA break is a time to refresh both physically and emotionally

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has welcomed the FIFA break to refresh his side after a hectic run of fixtures.

Stellies find themselves in third place on the Betway Premiership standings and in the knockout rounds of the CAF Confederation Cup.

They were unlucky to lose to Kaizer Chiefs in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup but responded to that disappointment by holding Orlando Pirates to a goalless league draw before overcoming high-flying Sekhukhune United last time out.

Next up is a Premiership match with Magesi before Barker’s side take on Zamalek in the Confederation Cup quarter-finals.

Reflecting on the season so far, the Stellies boss explained that the break has come at a good time for his team.

He said on Times Live: “It’s good to go into the FIFA break sitting in third position, and we’re now looking forward to the remainder of the season. We also have a big quarterfinal match against Zamalek to look forward to.

“I think the FIFA break is coming at a good time for us. We have played a lot of games of late, with some tough fixtures, both physically and emotionally.

“To win in our last game against a good team and to be in third position is really good. There is still a lot of work to be done, and we can’t get ahead of ourselves, but we are happy where we are.”
