Stellenbosch FC is set for a historic debut in the CAF Confederation Cup despite significant player departures

Stellenbosch FC embark on their CAF Confederation Cup debut today, taking on Nsingizi Hotspur in the first preliminary round at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

As the team anticipates their continental debut, coach Steve Barker has promised they would not underestimate the challenge ahead, ensuring thorough preparation to progress further.

Stellenbosch earned this opportunity by finishing third in the Betway Premiership last season, marking a significant achievement for the club. However, Barker emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and not underestimating their opponents from Eswatini.

“I’m extremely excited, not only personally but also for the entire football club, the players, and everyone involved,” Barker shared with the club’s media team. “You always dream of competing on the continent, and that day has finally arrived for us. The buzz around the club is incredible as we look forward to this first game in Africa.”

Barker expressed confidence in playing at Moses Mabhida Stadium, a venue familiar to the team. “It’s nice that we have played at Moses Mabhida before; we know Durban well.

“However, we understand that Nsingizi Hotspur has also worked hard to reach this stage,” he noted. Nsingizi Hotspur, having camped in South Africa and played at Moses Mabhida Stadium, demonstrated their seriousness about the competition.

Despite the excitement, Barker remained cautious, having studied Nsingizi’s gameplay. “They are not an easy team to beat. Last season, they conceded very few goals, which makes them a tough side to break down,” he observed.

The coach acknowledged the challenge of not having extensive footage of Nsingizi’s matches but stressed that Stellenbosch’s focus would be on executing their own game plan effectively.

Stellenbosch faces the added challenge of playing without key players Iqraam Rayners and Deano van Rooyen, who had recently joined Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, respectively. Their absence could test the depth of the squad as they aim to make a strong impression in their continental debut.

Barker concluded by reaffirming the team’s commitment to thorough preparation. “It’s not going to be easy; everyone wants to advance in these continental competitions. We cannot afford to be complacent and must leave no stone unturned in our preparation for Saturday.”

The stage is set for Stellenbosch’s historic debut, with the club determined to make their mark on the African stage, despite the challenges posed by both their opponents and recent player departures.
