Stellenbosch FC advanced to the next round of the Carling Knockout Cup after a thrilling 2-1 extra-time victory over Amazulu FC.
Andre de Jong was instrumental for Stellenbosch, scoring one goal and assisting another. His early header was saved by Amazulu’s Richard Ofori, but de Jong later provided a perfect cross for Devon Titus to open the scoring.
Amazulu improved in the second half and equalized through Tshepang Moremi. An opportunistic attack resulted in a perfectly weighted through ball for Tshepang Moremi, who found the bottom corner with his shot to level matters.
Stellenbosch nearly stole the spoils in regulation time when Titus smartly picked up a half-volley, but again Ofori was quick to react and forced extra time.
Reaming a nuisance in added time, de Jong would turn provider to scorer. A sublime cross from Sanele Barnes was guided home off the New Zealander’s head to give the visitors the lead.
Amazulu were rampant in the dying embers, forcing several saves from Stellies gloveman Sage Stephens, but was unable to find an equaliser.
