Spanish La Liga: Gameweek 38 Preview

Luis Suarez looks to inspire Atleti to another victory that would seal the La Liga title

Atletico Madrid’s top scorer Luis Suarez scored a dramatic late winner as Diego Simeone’s men fought back to beat Osasuna and put themselves on the verge of their first La Liga trophy in seven years. We head into the last gameweek with Atletico needing just one more victory to win La Liga while Real Madrid will need to win and hope for the best in Atletico’s match. After losing to Celta Vigo last Sunday, Barcelona are out of the title race. Who will win La Liga?

Friday 21 May

Levante 17/20

Draw 28/10

Cadiz 28/10

(21:00)

Mid-table rivals will lock horns at Estadio Ciudad de Valencia on Friday night to kick-off the final round. This fixture will be more a celebration match for both sides where they will want to wrap up a successful campaign with a win. Both sides are nowhere near relegation zone and they both had some exciting moments this season beating some big teams and enduring some nice unbeaten runs. Back a draw in this match.

Saturday 22 May

Elche 7/10

Draw 28/10

Athletic Bilbao 36/10

(18:00)

Elche put themselves back in the mix when they beat Cadiz in the all-important penultimate fixture. The hosts need a win or else they will be relegated to Segunda division. Athletic Bilbao felt hard done last Sunday when they lost to Real Madrid by an odd goal at the San Mames. The visitors will want to wrap up the season with a win although the betting suggests this will be one-way traffic for Elche. I disagree with the betting and there’s no way I can miss out on the 36/10.

Huesca 13/20

Draw 33/10

Valencia 36/10

(18:00)

A win for Huesca will mean they retain their La Liga status for the very first time ever. The Oscenses have done really well to even be where they are, this is a team that was winless in La Liga at the start of the second round, but they’ve managed to register seven wins in the last four months, and this is evidence that hard work pays in football. It would be one of the best stories in football if Huesca were to survive the axe and I think they have what it takes to beat Valencia and keep their top-flight status. Back Huesca to make history and they will get their biggest win in La Liga.

Real Valladolid 7/1

Draw 42/10

Atletico Madrid 1/3

(18:00)

What a weekend it was for Atletico Madrid who saw their team concede a late goal against Osasuna while Real Madrid scored and topped the table. It looked as if Simeone’s men would let go of the title, but it wasn’t the case as two very late goals from Renan Lodi and Suarez ensured a win here would see them lift the trophy. Real Valladolid won’t sit back and watch Atleti being crowned champions they will want to gate crash the party as they need a win to survive relegation. This is a tight game between two teams with contrasting fortunes. Despite everything I still think quality will prevail so back Atletico Madrid to win this match and be crowned La Liga champions for the first time in seven years.

Celta Vigo 33/20

Draw 28/10

Real Betis 14/10

(18:00)

Celta Vigo caused one of the biggest upsets last weekend when they ended Barcelona’s title hopes and beat them in their backyard. The hosts are enjoying a five-match winning streak and will want to make it six and wrap up the season in fine style. Real Betis are in good form themselves enjoying a nine-match unbeaten streak, losing just once in their last 14 La Liga matches. Back these sides to cancel each other out.

Real Madrid 1/3

Draw 48/10

Villarreal 13/2

(18:00)

The defending champions Real Madrid have it all to play for in the last game where they look to retain their La Liga trophy. Madrid topped the table for a few minutes last Sunday only for Atletico to score two late goals. The task is simple for Los Blancos, win the game and hope for the best in the other game otherwise Atletico will be champions. Villarreal have a Europa League final to worry about so I think this will be an easy win for Madrid.

Osasuna 24/10

Draw 28/10

Real Sociedad 19/20

(18:00)

Real Sociedad need a win to book their place in next season’s Europa League. They visit a very competitive Osasuna team that is well coached and ready to fight. This will definitely be one of the most difficult games on this last round. These sides have scored against each other in each of their last five meetings. As the form suggests, back Both Teams To Score (Yes) here.

Granada 13/10

Draw 26/10

Getafe 19/10

(18:00)

Two teams that were below par this season will square off at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes to wrap up what was a very disappointing season. These teams were fighting for UEFA Champions League spots last season but now they find themselves a few points above relegation zone. These teams really dropped from what they were last season and I can’t pick a winner here so back a draw.

Sevilla 13/20

Draw 33/10

Alaves 34/10

(18:00)

Sevilla looked like they would gate crash the top-three or at least push the teams above them, but the wheels came off when it mattered most. Last week, they were handed an absolute hiding by Villareal who beat them 4-0. Alaves are safe from the axe after collecting seven points in their last three games which include back-to-back wins against Elche and Granada. Back these sides to share the spoils.

Eibar 48/10

Draw 4/1

Barcelona 9/20

(18:00)

Barcelona blew their title hopes after failing to win in each of their last three matches, winning just once in their last five games. This poor run of form sums up Barcelona’s season and this could see Ronald Koeman being sacked after this game. This is Eibar’s last game in La Liga as they have been relegated to Segunda division. Back Barcelona to win their first match in four games.

DOUBLE @ 5/1
