Julen Lopetegui

Sevilla FC sporting director Monchi has given clarity on the recent rumours engulfing coach Julen Lopetegui.

During the week, media reports started doing the rounds claiming that Monchi had spoken to former Granada coach Diego Martinez about replacing Lopetegui, who would reportedly be leaving at the end of the current season.

But Monchi told Cope, the reports were complicatedly false adding that Lopetegui was staying at the club.

“There’s no other path than that of Lopetegui, he brings a lot and we appreciate him,” Monchi said according to Cope.

“He has a valid contract.”

In 2019, Lopetegui joined Sevilla on a three-year contract. He then went on to lead Sevilla to defeat Inter Milan in the 2020 UEFA Europa League Final to claim his first club honour.

Lopetegui then agreed to a further two-year extension on 10 January 2021.

This season Sevilla have struggled at times and are currently are placed fourth on the La Liga table. There are those who feel a coaching change is needed hence the media speculation doing the rounds.
