Sea Robbers Stall in CAF Champions League Opener

Orlando Pirates‘ continental journey began with a frustrating goalless draw against minnows Disciples FC in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round, played in Mauritius.

Despite enjoying the majority share of possession and laying siege to the Disciples’ goal, Jose Riveiro’s men were unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute defensive rearguard.

Pirates talisman Monnapule Saleng had a golden chance to break the deadlock just before halftime but his effort sailed over the crossbar, leaving the Buccaneers to rue a missed opportunity.

In search of a breakthrough, coach Jose Riveiro introduced fresh legs at the start of the second half, with Thalente Mbatha and Kabelo Dlamini replacing Makhehleni Makhaula and Relebohile Mofokeng respectively. Despite the changes, Pirates struggled to find a way past the resolute Disciples defense.

Tshegofatso Mabasa came closest to breaking the deadlock in the closing staegs of the game when his powerful shot from inside the box rattled the crossbar, leaving the Pirates bench and supporters in disbelief.

The final whistle brought an end to the proceedings and leaving the delicately poised ahead of the return leg at Orlando Stadium on Friday, August 23.
