Rulani Mokwena aiming to reunite with Percy Tau at Wydad

A reunion is looming for the former Mamelodi Sundowns duo after Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca’s recognition of Al-Ahly’s Percy Tau as a prime target for the current transfer window.

Wydad’s head coach Rulani Mokwena is well aware of Tau’s abilities having worked with him during their spell at Mamelodi Sundowns where the ‘Lion of Judah’ was featured in 103 matches before departing the club.

The South African forward, has been a key player for Al Ahly since joining the Egyptian heavyweights from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021. During his time with the Egyptian Red Devils, he has won two CAF Champions League titles and two Egyptian Premier League titles.

However, after a fallout regarding training conduct with Swiss coach Marcel Koller, it is understood that Tau’s future in Cairo is in the air, which has led to several suitors monitoring the situation closely.

The disagreement between Tau and Koller has since seen the South African international being excluded from the starting lineup in recent matches. Koller has accused Tau’s training conduct as problematic, training carelessly, and sometimes leaving group sessions citing injuries.

Saad Drib, a member of the interim committee managing Wydad Casablanca, has come out and expressed interest in Tau.

“We are in a phase of renewing Wydad’s squad, and we are looking for experienced players to replace those who have left, like Yahya Jabrane, Ayoub El Amloud, and Yahia Attiyat Allah,” Drib said.

“A player like Percy Tau, among others, is of course someone we are interested in signing.”

Several clubs have shown interest in signing Percy Tau. Notably, Kaizer Chiefs are keen on bringing him back to the PSL. Additionally, there are reports of other African giants preparing substantial offers to rival Kaizer Chiefs.

This season, Percy Tau has made 33 appearances for the Red Devils in which he has found the net nine times as the team went on an incredible run securing the treble as well as the Club World Cup bronze medal.

On the other hand, the 30-year-old has also expressed a strong interest in returning to Europe. Despite his current situation at Al Ahly, he remains open to the idea of moving back if the right opportunity arises. His previous stints in Europe with clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, RSC Anderlecht, and Club Brugge have shown that he has the talent to compete at that level.

While there are no specific European clubs publicly linked to him at the moment, his impressive performances and versatility make him an attractive option for many teams. Additionally, Tau’s preference for a European move could influence his next career step.
