Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly set to unveil their new head coach during a press conference scheduled for Tuesday at the club’s Chloorkop headquarters.
According to Times Live, the reigning Betway Premiership champions are set to announce a European coach as the successor to Manqoba Mngqithi, who has been serving as interim head coach.
It remains unclear whether Mngqithi will assume an assistant coach role or if changes will extend to his technical team, including Steve Komphela, Wendell Robinson, Kennedy Mweene, and Romain Folz.
Mngqithi initially stepped in as co-coach following Rulani Mokwena’s departure in July. He was later appointed head coach after guiding Sundowns to an impressive 2023-24 season, during which they suffered only one Premiership defeat on the final day.
Currently, Sundowns sit atop the Premiership standings, level on points with Orlando Pirates but leading on goal difference after eight matches, each team having one loss.
However, the team has faced recent challenges, losing to Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Cup final and being eliminated by Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 Cup semifinals.
In the CAF Champions League group stage, Sundowns drew twice: a goalless draw at home against Maniema Union of the Democratic Republic of Congo and a 1-1 away draw with Morocco’s AS FAR. They are set to host Raja Casablanca at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, which could mark the new coach’s first match in charge.
When Sundowns announced Mokwena’s departure, they stated: “Coach Manqoba Mngqithi and the technical team will continue to oversee the training and preparation of the players for the upcoming season.”
Now, with a new European coach at the helm, Sundowns aim to navigate a challenging Group F in the FIFA Club World Cup, which includes Borussia Dortmund of Germany, Brazil’s Fluminense, and South Korean champions Ulsan Hyundai.
