Kaizer Chiefs have been handed a substantial fine by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) due to their supporters’ disruptive behavior during the Carling Knockout quarterfinal match against Mamelodi Sundowns.
This incident took place earlier in November when fans stormed the pitch following a contentious penalty decision by referee Luxolo Badi, leading to a significant 4-0 defeat for Chiefs.
The PSL’s disciplinary committee ruled that Chiefs must pay R250,000, with 50% suspended, resulting in an immediate payment of R150,000.
This isn’t the first time Amakhosi supporters have been involved in such behavior.
Earlier this season, fans reacted angrily by throwing objects onto the pitch during a league match against Sundowns after referee Skhumbuzo Gasa disallowed Edson Castillo’s goal for offside. That match ended in a 2-1 defeat for Chiefs to Sundowns.
“It’s a matter of public record that in the previous season, Kaizer Chiefs appeared at least four times on the same charges before the PSL DC.
“This season, they have now made a second appearance,” PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu said.
“The DC has observed that this particular type of misconduct is not only germain or exclusive to Kaizer Chiefs.
“Last week, Orlando Pirates FC suffered the same fate and it’s only a matter of time before other clubs follow suit.
“This type of misbehaviour, especially by those who claim to love and support their clubs, does not augur well for the development of a product that should easily be consumed without difficulties and unpalatable behaviour
“The DC directed that this particular issue be revisited in a manner that will ensure that we think outside the box and the sanctions are such that they also assist in stemming this particular tide”
