The clash will take place at the Cairo International Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 20h00 South African time.

The fixture comes after Bafana Bafana’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, giving new head coach Pitso Mosimane another opportunity to assess his squad.

Mosimane’s immediate priority is guiding Bafana towards the 2027 Afcon finals, which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

However, the meeting with Egypt offers the Bafana boss a chance to look beyond the competitive demands of qualification and assess some of the players fighting for places in his squad.

With the friendly coming at the end of a demanding international window, Mosimane could use the opportunity to rotate his side and give valuable minutes to players who have had limited involvement during the qualifiers.

There will, however, be little sense of a traditional friendly when these two African heavyweights meet.

Bafana and the Pharaohs have developed a competitive rivalry over the years, with their encounters often producing plenty of drama.

Their most recent meeting was no different, with Bafana suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to a 10-man Egypt in an incident-filled Afcon Group B clash in Morocco in December 2025.

Mohamed Salah settled that encounter from the penalty spot in the 45th minute, but the Liverpool legend will not feature this time around.

Salah was released from the Egyptian squad ahead of the Pharaohs’ crucial Afcon qualifier against South Sudan, with the decision reportedly agreed before Egypt’s opening qualifier against Angola.

His absence will take away one of the biggest attacking threats in African football, but Egypt still possess plenty of quality and will be determined to make home advantage count.

In the Bafana dugout, the fixture carries an added layer of significance for Mosimane.

The Bafana coach knows Egyptian football particularly well after a hugely successful spell in charge of Al Ahly.

He led the Cairo giants to back-to-back Caf Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021, becoming a familiar figure in Egyptian football during his time at the club.

That experience could prove valuable as he takes his Bafana side into one of Africa’s most intimidating football environments.

The Cairo International Stadium is expected to provide a typically passionate atmosphere, while Egypt will be keen to make a statement against one of the continent’s leading sides.

The focus for Bafana will be on building momentum under Mosimane and giving the coach a clearer picture of the players he can rely on as the Afcon qualification campaign progresses.

The result may not carry competitive consequences, but the encounter presents another valuable test for a Bafana side entering a new era under a familiar coach.

Prediction: Draw

Egypt might be favourites on home soil, with Bafana seen as the outsiders.

However, Bafana have shown they can compete with strong opposition and may benefit from Mosimane using the fixture to give fresh faces and fringe players an opportunity.

Egypt’s home advantage and greater familiarity with the conditions could prove important, but Bafana should be capable of keeping the scoreline tight.
