The penultimate round of English Premier League fixtures brought heart pounding action before our very eyes. It seemed inevitable that Manchester City would take the league, but if any team would cause a speed bump it would be West Ham. After the North London Derby, Tottenham edged Burnley by a Harry Kane penalty and Arsenal folded under the pressure at St. James’ Park, with Leeds, Everton, and Burnley leaving the relegation decision to the final day. Formation 4-3-3
Goalkeeper – Hugo Lloris (Tottenham)
No keeper had a brilliant performance this matchweek, but the odd collection of the ball through crosses here and there coupled with one good save, Lloris kept one of two clean sheets this gameweek.
Defender – Ryan Sessegnon (Tottenham)
Playing wing-back, Ryan Sessegnon was able to get up the pitch more often than not, and he made it count on almost every occasion, and could have easily bagged at least three assists on another day.
Defender – Eric Dier (Tottenham)
Playing in the centre of a back three can be seen as “easy” but barking out instructions and doing your job when called upon was Dier’s bread and butter against Burnley.
Defender – Toti Gomes (Wolves)
Toti Gomes played his first match since the beginning of January against Norwich and looked the most comfortable of the back-three. He flung himself into challenges as if injury was not a concern and made three crucial blocks in a 1-1 draw.
Defender – Matty Cash (Aston Villa)
The right-back is just getting better and better in the final third with pinpoint crosses, on the ground or in the air, taking on defenders and even scoring a super goal with his defensive contributions almost overlooked. That’s three assists and two goals in his last six fixtures.
Midfielder – Rodri (Man City)
If there was one bright spark in Man City’s seemingly dull performance other than Gabriel Jesus, it would have to be the heart of their midfield, Rodri. He set up Jack Grealish’s beautiful volley and intervened in crucial opposition counter attacks.
Midfielder – Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)
As any midfielder should be, Bruno was great on the ball and physical when in defence. After a great performance, he netted a well-deserved goal to cap of his night.
Midfielder – James Maddison (Leicester)
Yet another goal for James Maddison, but most importantly, another two assists for the midfielder. He loved having Jamie Vardy back as an option, and his pinpoint pass over the top for the second was brilliant, alongside clever touches to create space to exploit throughout the fixture.
Forward – Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) *Star of the Week*
Bowen bent his run expertly against a tightly managed Man City defensive line to net West Ham’s first goal, followed by another timely run and neatly placed finish to give West Ham a two-goal cushion over Man City. He made his presence felt very physically in every challenge and he was the Hammers biggest threat throughout the 90 minutes.
Forward – Yoane Wissa (Brentford)
Yoane Wissa netted two classy goals to keep Brentford’s matchday alive. Everyone upfront for the Bees looked a threat, but Wissa converted his opportunities.
Forward – Jamie Vardy (Leicester)
To whom it may concern, Jamie Vardy still has it! His two goals virtually retired Watford’s goalkeeper, Ben Foster. Vardy was always available to his players to receive a ball to his feet and had an all-round forward’s performance any manager would want.
