Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng played key roles in Bafana Bafana‘s emphatic 5-0 victory over Eritrea.

The win at the Al Salaam Stadium in Cairo saw Bafana maintain their perfect start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with Mofokeng announcing himself on the international stage with his first goals for the senior national team.

The Orlando Pirates youngster struck twice in the first half, showing composure in front of goal, while Appollis was instrumental in creating opportunities for his teammates.

The Polokwane City attacker finished the match with three assists, setting up Mofokeng, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh as Mosimane’s side produced an impressive attacking display.

Mosimane was particularly pleased with Appollis’ versatility, while also singling out Mofokeng for his performance.

“I am happy with the assists from Appollis, he can play anywhere, on the side or he can come inside,” said Mosimane.

“He gave an assist for Luther Singh who had a chance to come back (to the national team). And Rele showed his class, what a top player.”

While Bafana enjoyed a comfortable evening in attack, Mosimane now faces a selection dilemma in midfield ahead of Saturday’s international friendly against Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium.

Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas have both suffered injuries during the camp, with Aubaas forced off after just 12 minutes against Eritrea.

Durban City midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel was introduced as his replacement and impressed on his senior international debut, forming a midfield partnership with Sphephelo Sithole.

Mosimane could hand Poggenpoel another start against Egypt, although the experienced Themba Zwane is also an option after making a brief appearance against Eritrea.

With injuries reducing his midfield options, Mosimane will have to decide whether to retain the youthful Poggenpoel or turn to Zwane for experience against the Pharaohs.
