Pitso Mosimane joins Persian Gulf Pro League side Esteghlal FC

Persian Gulf Pro League outfit Esteghlal Football Club have announced the appointment of Pitso Mosimane.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al-Ahly coach takes over from Javad Nekounam, who left the club this month after a poor start to the season.

Esteghlal are currently in 11th place on the Iranian top-flight with two wins, two draws and three losses from their opening seven games of the new season.

Since leaving Sundowns, Mosimane has coached Egyptian side Al Ahly, Saudi Arabian team, l-Ahli, Al-Wahda from the United Arab Emirates and Abha FC from Saudi.

He has expressed his delight in joining the nine-time league winners and two time Asian champions.

Mosimane said in the Citizen: “Esteghlal is a very big club in the Gulf region, with a long and illustrious history.

“The two Asian Champions League stars on top of their badge tell you what kind of club this is. Their last trophy was won in 2022, and we can believe their fans are hungry for glory once again.

“The challenge that awaits us is steep, but it is our privilege to lead such a prolific club. I would like to thank the club leadership for placing their trust in us. We are ready to get to work.”
