Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane insists he won’t risk goalkeeper Denis Onyango for Wednesday’s crucial league clash against Bloemfontein Celtic.

Onyango hobbled off with a hamstring strain in the 3-0 victory over Chippa United on Saturday and was replaced by Kennedy Mweene.

With a short turnaround between fixtures, Mweene is likely to start the match against Celtic although Mosimane did say he would give his first-choice shot-stopper until the last minute to decide if he will play.

The Sundowns mentor said: “Denis had a tight hamstring, we all know about that always giving him a hard time, but it’s a challenge with all goalkeepers jumping and all that.

“We are taking precaution, the doctors have checked and the head of medical told us there is a slight concern but that doesn’t make him unavailable and he can’t worsen it.

“The most important thing is not to worsen the injury and then we lose him for the rest of the league and Champions League that’s coming.

“So, the doctors feel that we are okay – he can play, so it’s up to him how he feels in the morning [on Wednesday]. If he feels good then it’s a green light and he starts and plays.”

Wednesday’s match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium is Sundowns’ game in hand on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs and a win would take them within four points of the Soweto club.
