Sparkes joined the Sea Robbers at the start of the 2018/19 campaign as Bucs attempted to solve their defensive woes at the back and in goal.

It appears the Welshman did make an impact as Pirates conceded 40 goals in 2016/17 as well as 26 times the next season.

However, in 2019/20 the team conceded 24 times which was the joint best defensive record in South Africa’s Premiership.

Nonetheless, it seems the former Swansea City coach won’t be returning for pre-season with Pirates ahead of the new campaign.

The former Swansea, New York Red Bulls (MLS) and Red Bull Salzburg (Austrian Bundesliga) mentor appears to be intent on returning home in order to be closer to his family.
