Sekhukhune United coach Peter Hyballa has explained why he joined the Betway Premiership club without a technical team.
The German mentos joined Sekhuhkhune this season after parting ways with Eredivisie side NAC Breda.
It is not uncommon for coaches to join Premier Soccer League sides without the support of back-up staff, and Hyballa says he arrived in South Africa alone to work with local coaches.
Hyballa has overseen a tumultuous pre-season with the club, guiding Babina Noko to friendly wins over AmaZulu and Angolan Girabola side Bravos do Maquis alongside defeats to Motsepe Foundation Championship sides Orbit College, Hungry Lion and Casric Stars as well as Premiership club Stellenbosch.
He has, however, lost analyst Tinashe Shingai Mukandatsama over a reported fallout, and rumours surrounding the club suggest that Hyballa’s style of coaching has ruffled feathers amongst both staff and players.
Sekhuhkune play Cape Town City in the quarter-finals of the MTN8 this weekend.
Ahead of the game, Hyballa said on iDiski Times: “We had discussions, we spoke about this and it wasn’t also…it was my choice to come alone, if you come alone [to a new country] it’s always the same, two cultures come together and I think it’s important as a head coach to take this culture.
“[If] I come direct with three assistant coaches, then it may have been a culture shock. And I want to learn the coaches, the assistant coaches, I want to have local coaches, because I know my style, I go my way – but I need local guys who help me in this environment.
“But it’s also something to discuss with the club if I need one coach from Europe or like that, we can discuss about it, that was the reason [for not coming with my own technical staff].”
