Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa has voiced his confidence in the Buccaneers’ potential to unseat Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership.
The Pirates have kicked off their campaign in spectacular style, winning all seven of their matches and soaring to the top of the league table.
Despite their impressive performances in recent seasons under head coach Jose Riveiro, the league title has continued to evade the Buccaneers.
However, with a squad full of confidence and determination, Makgopa expressed belief that this could finally be the season to break the curse.
Speaking on Bucs Change Room, he said, “Our fans are expecting the league title, and it must be at the top of our list. We have to be champions of the Betway Premiership.
“We want to give them the belief that ‘yes, we can do it.'”
New recruit Deano van Rooyen shared Makgopa’s optimism, emphasizing the importance of consistency. “If we can be consistent in every game, we can achieve our goals as a team,” the defender stated.
“Our aim is not just to win the league but also the CAF Champions League. We just have to showcase what we’ve got, and I think we can do it as a team.”
The Pirates will soon test their ambitions on the continental stage. On 26 November, they face Algerian side CR Belouizdad in their CAF Champions League group-stage opener, marking a significant step in their quest for African supremacy.
With their strong league form and renewed focus, the Buccaneers are positioning themselves as serious contenders both domestically and on the continent.
