Orlando Pirates claimed their second consecutive MTN8 title by defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 in a penalty shootout at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Sipho Chaine, the Buccaneers’ goalkeeper, saved three penalties, breaking Pirates’ streak of losses against the Brazilian side.
Pirates, the defending Wafa Wafa champions, entered the clash as underdogs, aiming to end their three-game losing streak against Sundowns.
Head Coach Jose Riveiro fielded Zakhele Lepasa and Kermit Erasmus up front, with Patrick Maswanganyi and Monnapule Saleng in support.
Sundowns, led by Rhulani Mokwena, featured Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile in their starting lineup, with Tebogo Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, and Rivaldo Coetzee controlling the midfield.
Both teams started nervously in the noisy Durban night, with Sundowns nearly capitalising on a Pirates defensive mistake early on.
As the first half progressed, Pirates gained confidence, pressuring Sundowns, who struggled to build from the back.
The second half saw a cautious approach, resulting in numerous midfield battles.
Sundowns had a chance in the 74th minute from a set-piece, but Shalulile’s attempt went over the post.
The match remained level after regular time, requiring extra time to find a winner.
Referee Abongile Tom played a key role, booking a Sundowns player for simulation after a penalty claim, as the game headed to penalties.
Sundowns failed to convert their first three penalties, allowing Karim Kimvuidi to score the winning spot-kick and clinch the silverware for the Soweto giants.
