Orlando Pirates look to be on a mission ahead of the 2024/25 season by making an official approach for Stellenbosch FC captain Deano van Rooyen.
The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the standout performers in his position in the South African top-flight. His contributions and leadership skills have caught the eye after being nominated for the 2023/24 DStv Premiership Defender of the Season and have now reportedly attracted extensive interest in his services.
Although Stellenbosch may be flattered by the approach, Pirates will have to convince the player of their ambitions ahead of the new season to convince Van Rooyen that he will be an integral member of the Buccaneers squad. Stellies are also keen to curtail any approach for their captain having tabled a contract extension.
However, reports suggest that the club is not willing to let go of its influential leader as they will be competing in the CAF Confederations Cup this season, and retaining the services of Van Rooyen will allow Stellies to compete with their best squad as they seek continental glory.
A potential blockbuster transfer, granted Pirates get their man, will prove a turning point in Deano’s career as he has spent his entire professional club career with the Cape Winelands outfit.
The Sea Robbers ended the 2023/24 season in second place, meaning, they will be competing in the CAF Champions League this season and are seeking to reinforce their right-back options, and want extra competition for Thabiso Monyane and Thabiso Lebitso, while Bandile Shandu continues on the road to recovery.
Since making his professional debut, the Stellies captain has gone on to accomplish over 150 games for the club. Van Rooyen, who began his stellar career as a winger, has developed into one of the stalwarts of Steve Barker’s squad as an attacking right-back.
Should an agreement and personal terms be finalised, the Cape Winelands star will become their latest signing of the window after making the move permanent of former SuperSport United midfielder Thalante Mbatha, Selaelo Rasebotja, the exciting Angolan Gilberto, and Thuso Moleleki.
